Wednesday Important Detox Juicing Info. Day 20 of The Self-Love Detox Challenge

Morning health warriors!

It's Wednesday and I know that for this Self-Love Detox Challenge, I have been posting menu's on Friday but this week I will be posting it on Thursday. It is pretty much a re-post of the juice segment from last Friday's menu but I have added a whole leap of other juice recipes for you to choose from. The reason I am posting it earlier is because I want you to begin juicing this Friday and that means you need to be ready in advance. I buy my fruits and vegetables along with water and supplements, the 1-2 days before I start my cleanse. I don't like having to do energy draining tasks the first 48 hours of juicing; and shopping is energy draining. The first 24 hours my body is adjusting to going without food and I have been known to experience mild headaches, feeling more tired than usual, and running to the bathroom for more #'s 1&2. This is normal, it's another reason I like to stick close to home, do very gentle stretching or a short walk, (remember to not be too far from a washroom) and lots of water, juices, and rest as I need it. Don't fight the urges to rest, it's good for you.

I have been known to tell people that I will be away for 3 days and won't be bringing my cel or any electronics as it is a health retreat. I don't care if it's not 100% truthful, I car about my health & creating an opportunity to succeed at what I am doing. Juice/liquid fasts are serious business & they are not to be entered willy nilly, without proper prep, or without true commitment. I am giving you 3 days to do this, I like doing 7 days when time and finances allow but a solid three days is great for a seasonal boost.
I also do colonic irrigation as it helps with elimination, eases detox symptoms-which are worse for eczema or psoriasis sufferers, and it cuts the headaches big times!
     Clean Your Colon For more information-->http://shuddhcoloncare.com/ ‪#‎coloncleansing‬ ‪#‎Health‬ ‪#‎Fitness‬:
It's not for everyone & I am not judging those who don't want to do this. I am only giving it as a recommendation, I used to get them done professionally, then I studied colonic irrigation, and now I do them at home with an enema kit I bought at the pharmacy.
                           Www.nashvillecoloncleansecolonic.com:
I know some of you might not like this topic but it's important to know about. My first liquid detox was a thousand times worse than it had to be, and it was all because I detoxes too much, too quickly, and my skin suffered horribly for it. I have never had an eczema flare like that before and it would have been completely avoided, if I had known about colonic irrigation. It was a Naturopath, a client, and a Rabbi, who taught me about detox and the importance of elimination in the colon. I am including a link to a video from YouTube that shows you how to do a home colonic safely. This is something you should discuss with a health provider before attempting, especially if you have a medical condition.

BTW, I DO NOT recommend coffee enema's or anything other than a water enema/colonic. That's my personal and professional opinion. Also, enema's and colonic's are not an every day thing, they are for use during cleanses or as a medical professional suggests. People get hooked on these types of methods because they result in rapid weight loss, however, our bodies have a very efficient, effective, and properly constructed method of expelling waste. Irrigating the colon is only needed for specific reason's and for short periods of time.
If you are not comfortable performing a home enema, by all means go to a professional. Just research, check qualifications, and reviews before hand. Personally, when I juice fast, a colonic every day is a necessity.
I would also like to suggest that you clean your home and especially your bathroom, really well, before your fast begins. You will not have the energy to do these things and you will feel much better attempting this in a clean and sanitary environment.

The benefits of colonic irrigation:

Colon Hydrotherapy Benefits | Scottsdale Colon Hydrotherapy:
I also highly recommend that you do not change or stop taking medication that your doctor has prescribed you, while cleansing. You must consult your health provider before beginning any detox program and juicing is no different. Try to seek out a Naturopath who will listen to you and knows about juicing. My family doctor was big on natural alternative's and had no qualms about my juicing but I did stick to taking my probiotics, my thyroid meds, and I slowed down on days I needed to. I also drink loads of spring water and detox water when juice fasting.

I am going to focus on those of you with adrenal, thyroid, and autoimmune issues for a moment.
Juicing is a great way to kick start a sluggish metabolism, support the body's natural desire for health, to detox, and turn over a new healthy leaf. However, if you struggle with the above mentioned issues, you need to be aware of some important things.

1-Take it easy on goitrogenic foods that could worsen your thyroid's functionality. Here is an info-graphic on goitrogens:
Goitrogens are naturally occurring anti-nutrients in certain foods that interfere with the production of thyroid hormones...Cooking has been shown to effectively remove goitrogenic compounds. People with thyroid issues commonly have food sensitivities. All processed and man-made foods need to be avoided at all costs. Other common sensitivities include those of the nightshade family such as eggplant, tomatoes, & potatoes.:
I personally do not have a problem with almonds, flax, pumpkin seeds or figs. I eat from the above listed foods sparingly and usually have them cooked when I can.

I incorporate a bit of cabbage, peaches, strawberries, and pears when juicing but it's about 2 juices over my whole juice fast. I know my body, I listen to what it's telling me on any given day, I am aware that on some days my thyroid is not operating well and I respect what my body needs & doesn't need.

2-I have incorporated bone broth on liquid fasts when my thyroid was particularly bad and my body was in autoimmune response over drive. I am including links to my bone broth recipe & Dr. Josh Axe's site, he helped me with a lot of issues that modern medecine, specialist's, tests, and regular doctor's, were just not finding or listening to me about. I would also recommend the Stop The Thyroid Madness blog if you are struggling, all your tests come back as normal but you know something is wrong, and you need help or have question's, that you are not finding or getting answers to,

3-Drink juices that support your thyroid. I always include them in my fasts and they do make a difference.

4-Don't push it! And this applies to everyone doing a juice/liquid cleanse, you cannot expect to be well if you abuse your body, no matter how well nourished it is. I mean it when I say rest, gentle exercises, and kindness to yourself. Self-Love, there is a reason why the word self is first.

5-You may want to keep a 3 day juice journal. The reason why is because some juices may negatively or positively impact your body more than others. I know that when I took a mix of carrots, apples, a beet with a know of ginger and a stalk of celery, that juice made my energy levels sky rocket! I was hyper but super charged and happy. It's good to take notes, so you can refer back to them and decide which juices make you feel the best; this way you can incorporate them in your daily routine, even after the juice fast is done.

6- Drink when you need to, don't deny yourself juice because you think you're having too much. These juices are your source of nutrients, let yourself have them. My first day is usually 6-7 juices and then my second day goes up, along with having warm almond milk and all the other recommended liquids. I feel fine and full.

7- Lastly, I suggest getting some Tulsi tea, I like Pukka Three Tulsi tea. It's a bit pricey but I feel really great when I drink it, it's also known as Holy Basil tea and is purported to have a number of health benefits. I discovered that I feel much better and less sluggish when I drink it, on bad thyroid days. I also drink lemon, ginger, fig-wort detox tea in the morning and just before bed. These support my detox process and ease digestive issues.

Goitreogens, What are They & Where are They Found? (Thyroid part 6)

 (Picture from endocrineweb.com)

Goitrogens are substances that suppress the function of the thyroid gland by interfering with iodine uptake, which can, as a result, cause an enlargement of the thyroid, i.e., a goiter.

Thank you wikipedia.

This is some of the most important thyroid information you will hear because you can directly control goitrogens from getting into your system, far too many people know nothing about them, (I was one of you, so don't be embarassed) and it's an easy fix that has a big impact on health.

I was unknowingly imbibing foods and drinks that would appear to be very healthy, follow recommended standards for nutrition, and tasted delicious, but were having a very dangerous side effect. I did not begin to conect the dots, until my health had begun to take a horrible turn for the worse, doctor's were stumped, and I noticed an immediate plumet in my energy levels after eating and particulairly drinking specific foods. Biggest offender in my life? You won't believe it because it is touted as the beginning and end all of health conscious individual's, it's sold everywhere, is added to many things, and has become extremely popular.
KALE.
Yup, this little green monster of goodness was seriously sabotaging my health, along with an extensive list of cruciferous vegetables and fruits that I was juicing, blending into smoothies, and eating in the raw or adding to many dishes. How can this be?
Well, it's a gotirogen and I did not know or understand what that meant, where to find them, or what their impact was on my body. Turns out, goitrogens are a BIG deal.

I am going to drop some information on you from this blog, because it was very informative, helped me figure quite a lot out, and did not bash on these vegetables and fruits as some do, it's really more about understanding the role food and medication plays in the lives of different people facing different circumstances. Here is the link to the blog whf.org, if you would like to explore further:
http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=george&dbid=250

Goitrogens

From a science perspective, "goitrogen" is a term used to describe any substance that can cause enlargement of the thyroid gland. That's because "goiter" is an enlarged thyroid gland. (Sometimes a person with an enlarged thyroid gland is described as "having a goiter," and sometimes the condition itself is simply referred to as "goiter.") A "goitrogen" is simply any substance that causes or contributes to goiter.
There are many different chemical substances that can contribute to goiter. From a chemical standpoint, they usually have nothing in common except for their ability to cause thyroid enlargement.

Many drugs act as goitrogens. These drugs include lithium (a drug used to treat bipolar disorder) and phenylbutazone (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug). Sometimes these drugs are described as having "goitrogenic effects" instead of being called goitrogens themselves. Most of the time, drugs with goitrogenic effects interfere with iodine metabolism. Since the thyroid needs iodine to produce thyroid hormones, drugs that interfere with iodine metabolism often prevent the thyroid from making its iodine-containing hormones properly. (Without the proper amount of iodine, the thyroid cannot make sufficient amounts of thyroid hormone. When the thyroid fails to make enough of its hormones, the pituitary gland in the brain sends a message to the thyroid to increase in size and make more thyroid hormone. That increase in thyroid size is what scientists call goiter.) Nutritional deficiency of iodine is the most common dietary cause of goiter, and, in this sense, iodine deficiency could be accurately described as goitrogenic.

Goitrogenic Foods

Contrary to popular belief, foods themselves are not "goitrogenic" in the sense of causing goiter whenever they are consumed, or even when they are consumed in excess. In fact, most foods that are commonly called goitrogenic - such as the cruciferous vegetables (including broccoli, cabbage, kale, and cauliflower) and soyfoods - do not interfere with thyroid function in healthy persons even when they are consumed on a daily basis. Nor is it scientifically correct to say that foods "contain goitrogens," at least not if you are thinking about goitrogens as a category of substances like proteins, carbohydrates, or vitamins. With respect to the health of our thyroid gland, all that can be contained in a food are nutrients that provide us with a variety of health benefits but which, under certain circumstances, can also interfere with thyroid function. The term "goitrogenic food" makes it sound as if something is wrong with the food, but that is simply not the case. What causes problems for certain individuals is not the food itself but the mismatched nature of certain substances within the food to their unique health circumstances.

Goiter, Thyroid Function, and Diet

With respect to diet, the most common cause of goiter is iodine deficiency from lack of iodine-containing foods. However, other food factors can come into play under certain unique circumstances.
For example, since the mineral selenium is required for certain activities within the thyroid gland, selenium deficiency can combine with borderline iodine deficiency to produce goiter. The selenium content of foods is highly variable and depends to a large extent upon soil conditions. For this reason, in parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America where soils are particularly low in selenium, thyroid problems related to borderline iodine intake may be worsened by this added problem of soil selenium deficiency and inadequate intake of selenium-rich foods.

Thank you, The World's Healthiest Foods.Org

I really want you to focus on the part that states, "what causes problems for certain individuals is not the food itself but the mismatched nature of certain substances within the food to their unique health circumstances."
This is important because we have a tendency in our society to over do it on everything. Mesaning, that if we hear that soya is good for you, we immediately start shoving it into every nook and cranny of food, supplements, body care, etc. If something is thought to be bad we vilify it and hope for it's destruction for all time. This is true of fat and cholesterol, there was a time when we believed eggs were so dangerous you had to have them sparingly and that all cholesterol and fat were inherently bad. Science is not debunking these myths, we have a better understanding between the different types of cholesterol ie: HDL & LDL, and we are finding that fat is not all bad. Quality, quantity, and types, along with individual needs, plays a huge role in what could be considered to have a negative impact on one person and a positive impact on another. The same can be said for goitrogens. I will discuss further but first I want to give you a quick list of where you can find goitrogens, then I will go deeper into what this means for you if you are suffering from supressed thyroid function or a goiter.

Here are some examples of goitrogens:
• Broccoli
• Cauliflower
• Kale
• Brussels Sprouts
• Mustard Greens
• Radishes
• Spinach
• Strawberries
• Peaches
• Soy-Based Foods
• Peanuts

Pears are also a problem but for some reason were not on the list, so I am adding them. I am also adding this picture of foods to avoid in the first stages of thyroid healing. Some you will be able to add later on but in the beginning, it's highly recommended to avoid them. Gluten, soy, dairy, caffeine, stimulants, pre-workout burners, energy drinks, sugar in all forms, high yeast products, oils that are not cold pressed and organic, none of these are good for you. Read on...

Some Goitrogenic Foods Are Worse Than Others
While I definitely recommend that anyone with a thyroid condition minimize their consumption of goitrogens, and in some cases completely avoid them, there is no question some goitrogenic foods are worse than others.  For example, other than their goitrogenic properties, the cruciferous vegetables are very healthy, and with the exception of when someone is in the beginning phase of a natural thyroid treatment protocol, I don’t think eating cruciferous vegetables on an occasional basis for someone with hypothyroidism is a bad thing.
On the other hand, I’m not a big fan of soy, as while the soy industry has done a great job of marketing soy as being healthy for us, a lot of research has proved otherwise.  I mentioned above where someone who doesn’t have a thyroid disorder is unlikely to develop one by consuming goitrogens.  Well, soy might be an exception to this, as eating soy frequently can potentially lead to numerous health problems.
Once again, for someone who is not following a natural treatment protocol and is relying on the prescription drugs to manage their symptoms, eating some soy-based foods every now and then is fine.  On the other hand, since a person who has a hypothyroid condition should try to minimize the amount of goitrogens they eat, when they do choose to eat such foods it would be a better choice to eat the cruciferous vegetables, since they do offer greater health benefits.
Also, some goitrogenic foods are considered “mildly goitrogenic”.  Some examples include spinach, strawberries, and peaches.  So while anyone with a hypothyroid condition will want to minimize their consumption of these foods, eating them aren’t as bad for your thyroid gland as other goitrogenic foods that aren’t classified as being “mildly goitrogenic”, such as broccoli, cauliflower, and soy.
By the way, some sources do show that cooking these foods may destroy the goitrogenic activity.  I’m not sure if this has been fully confirmed through research studies, and so while it might be okay for someone with hypothyroidism to eat cooked cruciferous vege

Here is the link to the blog where I got the above information from, it's a great site and had a very positive influence on the choices I made when attempting to correct the thyroid imbalance in my body.
http://www.naturalendocrinesolutions.com/articles/goitrogens-thyroid-inhibiting-foods-you-should-avoid/

So, you look at the above list and you think, whoa la! I like a lot of the foods on that list, or like me, double whoa la! I have been eating so many of those things, especially in the raw and I don't want to give them up because they are a big part of my vegan/vegetarian/healthy lifestyle.
I am going to give you some food information about the list, down below. First though, this:

Two things:
1) It's a bummer, but the truth is, you are going to need to change all your dietary/sleep/activities/exercise/partying/life habits. Eliminate what needs to be eliminated, probably give up being vegan/vegetarian for a while, do what needs to be done to re-establish your health and it's never been more true if you are going about it the natural route; the way that I did. This with a lot of faith, prayer, commitment, patience, support from loved one's, research, a willingness to fight for what you believe, connecting with others in similar situations, being your biggest advocate, and remembering to be gentle; because it's a process that requires you to take time, respect the limits, and treat yourself with kindness.

2) There is hope, it can and will improve, once you are past the worst stages. The first and worst stages are usually the first 2-3 years, long but I rather you be mentally prepared, and I am speaking after diagnosis, when you have made an informed choice as to your approach to regaining your health. This is YOUR choice, do what you feel works best for you. You will be able to indulge here and there, in the foods you miss. It's not always easy but it will be worth it and you will feel grateful that God brought you this far. You are not alone but you are going to have to be singular in your approach to sticking to what is best for your health, and that means getting out what is harming, even if it seems to be good for you.

My personal experience with goitrogens was tediously long, I did not know a dang thing about any of this stuff and was perplexed as to why, whenever I ate certain foods, I noticed a considerable drop in my energy levels. I would struggle for days and sometimes weeks, to regain energy and pep. Health was on the decline & I could not figure out why. It was replaced by serious nausea, tightness around my throat, utter exhaustion, and a total feeling of depletion and lethargy.
I came upon the connection by chance after a doctor's appointment, I was feeling unwell and the doctor was confused about some test results he could not explain. I also had a UTI-again, and high protein levels in my urine. He gave me some meds & suggestions, off I went home to rest and recuperate. As I left, I opened my kale and spirulina smoothie and began to chug it down while walking down St. Denis street in Montréal. BIG MISTAKE!!!!
Within 5-10 mintes I felt so ill, I rushed home because I was sure I was going to start being sick in the middle of the street. I was weak, stomach was doing flip flops, began to puke, I wanted to cry, I felt like someone had knocked me out for the count.
It took 3 or 4 days to start feeling better, I decided right then and there that Kale & I, along with Spirulina, would be on a long term hiatus.
Turns out my body was not absorbing nutrients because of the reduced thyroid function, the goitrogens were inhibiting the function further, and the spirulina, although very healthy and high in protein, was not being absorbed because of the afore mentioned. I learned this because shortly after that appointment and getting really sick, I came across the blog that listed foods with goitrogens. That was when a bright lightbulb went off in my head, so much began to click into place and make sense. I researched and found alternatives for synthroid that didn't have porcine-I have a strong sensitivity to pork. For some reason my eczema flares and I have been known to get sick when I eat it, there's never a warning. Some days it's okay and others it is not so I choose to steer clear. This was never a problem when I was a vegetarian or raw vegan, but when I tried going full out Paleo, not good.
I found this great product that was a bovine based dessicated thyroid replacement, this along with some other natural meds, and a very specific diet with juicing has had a very positive impact. I will tell my story further in another post, as it is too long for here, and I want us to focus on goitrogens.
I am now able to indulge in strawberries and cauliflower, not on the regular but in moderate doses. Kale is still a big problem for me, I have since replaced it with Chard, which I tolerate much better. I am careful with how much I ingest that too because Chard is part of the nightshade family, which can be difficult on the organs. That's a whole other post for another time. I will come back & link it here when I do that post in the near future.
As for soy foods, well, I do fermented soy, particularly Nato. What the huh? Yes, Nato.
This is fermented, sticky, smelly, strong soy beans that are eaten in Japan. They are one of the few ways to get Vitamin K2 in your diet, and are easier on the body because they are a very fermented food which is super high in probiotics. Be warned, they be stinkies, and are not liked by most people. I am one of those that can eat them without problem. You can find them in the freezer section of some Asian markets, do not use the mustard or soy packets that come with, as they are not guaranteed gluten-free. I suggest getting your own gluten-free tamari and not using the mustard, as the mustard makes it worse,(when I taste it). Apparently some healthfood stores carry organic Nato, I have yet to come across them here in Québec.
Vitamin K2 is important because it fights Osteoporosis, protects the Heart, studies are showing it helps prevent Alzheimers, and fights Cancer. If you want more information about Vitamin K, here is the link to a great Youtube video that Dr. Mercola did & his site that talks about it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ePU5NiRDSM

http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2004/03/24/vitamin-k-part-two.aspx

Back to Soy.
Soy foods have gotten a bad rap, and that's because soy is an estrogen mimicker. This can lead to a host of hormonal imbalances and the long term repercussions are worrisome, Doctor's are beginning to stress the dangers from ingesting too much soy. This is a North American issue, for you see, we have gone soy overboard. What a big surprise-NOT!
We have put soy in everything and as per usual, too much of anything is not a good thing.
In Asia, soy makes up about 17% of the diet, much of the soy eaten is also in  fermented form.
Such as Tamari, Soy sauces, Tempeh, and Nato. If the Japanese are any pointers to longevity, (and they are, they have the largest population of centarians, period) then moderation, elimination of overly processed foods, loads of iodine rich seaweeds, and smaller amounts of fermented soy, less sugar and dairy, more savoury nourishing breakfasts, along with getting away from the SAD diet, are definitely the way to go.

As for cruciferous vegetables such as brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, radishes, greens like mustard and kale, well, new research is showing that cooking these before hand can actually make them easier to absorb and may benefit thyroid sufferers. I am more of a , watch your body, see how it reacts, if you notice it's negatively impacting your health, then nix it from your diet, kind of person.
You live with your body, you know it best, just listen and watch for the clues.
Living in awareness.
Then of course there is juicing.
Juicing is really important and can have serious consequences if you don't know what foods can help or harm the thyroid. I am including some great info graphics from some other sources, and down below there are some juice recipes to get you started. Juicing has been a major component in getting my thyroid back into working order, by the Grace of God, loads of prayer, lots of healthy, informed food, and medicinal choices, along with gentle exercise and better stress management, the recovery process has been extremely positive. Slow but steady.

Don't be discouraged by the No-No's, I know it seems rough eliminating and saying goodbye to foods you may really enjoy, you need to recall why you are doing all of this.
There are however, some really great juicing recipes to help support and get optimal thyroid function back, these are a few favourites I found from other bloggers:

And this one is from me, I drink this whenever I need energy and man oh man, do I ever get wired when I have it. It's such a good feeling! It's the red guy in the picture below, to the right.

I call it the Super Charge for a reason, just you wait and feel it.

THE SUPER CHARGE JUICE
Ingredients:
1 Beet
1 Stalk Celery
8 Red Apples
6 Carrots
1 Large Knob Ginger
1 Orange
(feel free to add 2 chard leaves if you like)
Run all the ingredients through the juicer & serve over ice!
Enjoy & leave a comment if you try any of these out.

I hope this post answered some questions for you, if you have others, please do not hesitate to leave them down below. I really do love to hear from you, don't forget to subscribe.
God bless you.

Liquid Fast Info & My Thyroid Journey Update

I know that it has been a while since I did anything for the Thyroid Journey segment but I was waiting for some test results before I went further. Along with working on my home business, writing my cookbook, and the October Ode to Fall, I have been a bit busy. As a matter of fact this blog post also falls under Ode to Fall because juice fasting is always a big part of my fall routine it's something I really enjoy. Every October I do a cleanse of some sort. When I was in my late teens/twenties, these fasts and cleanses were much more intense and for a longer duration. That was fine then but as I have gotten older, had difficulties with my thyroid, injuries, digestive issues, and reduced energy levels/slowed metabolism, I have come to find that a short and sweet cleanse is a great way to reboot.
This recent cleanse I did was 3 days of prep, 3 days of juicing, and 3 days of slow re-introduction to food. Why such a process? Well, cleansing, juice fasting, liquid fasting, etc. is intense and you need to prepare on different levels before undertaking such a process. And believe me, it is a process.
Firstly the 3 day prep and if I am honest, it's usually something I mentally start preparing myself for about a month in advance. I start gathering recipes, figuring out what I want to eat in the days leading up to my cleanse, I make sure that I can take some time off to rest, and I run through the different stages in my mind so I can handle the different things that come up. What kinds of things? Well, let's start at the beginning and I will get further into the process as I break it down; then I will post the recipe on the bottom.
1st-Choose the type of cleanse you want to do, research the benefits and side effects,(yes there are side effects) as well as any dangers, then discuss it with your Naturopath or doctor-especially if you have a medical condition.
Why?
Well, that's a good question and I have personal experience that I will share to save you from difficulties I was unaware of when I did such an intense cleanse. Here goes...
Many years ago I did The Master Cleanse, I liked it a lot, was very happy with the results, and felt really good. My weight went down, I flushed all the toxins from hard meds. I had been given for a very bad injury, my face and eyes were no longer swollen and were clear, I had fewer stomach problems, and I was physically ready to eat raw vegan without any difficulties.
Dark side to this?
I had such severe eczema that my skin was falling off my hand and required serious medical assistance, it was painful, extremely swollen, raw, and brought me to tears and caused extreme sleep disturbing discomfort. It turns out that when I saw a Naturopath, they told me that I had detoxed too much, too soon, and through the largest organ which is our skin because there was no where else for it to go. The medications I had been on were the main cause along with undiagnosed severe gluten allergies, this was where colonic irrigation was suggested along with major doses of liquid probiotics, and I sought this out immediately as a means to alleviate my horrendous symptoms. It made a huge difference and I have been a convert to colonics and probiotics whenever I cleanse. I will not do a cleanse without them, I even took lessons to learn how to do colonic irrigation so I could understand the process better.
Then there was the problem of the teeth and muscle weakness.
The Master Cleanse consists of Lemon Juice from fresh lemons, Grade B Maple syrup, Filtered water, and Cayenne pepper. The last ingredient being one of the worst things to ingest when prone to eczema or ulcers, lesson learned the hard way for eczema.
This mixture is very high in acid and sugar, a bad combo for erosion of dental enamel, contributes to gum problems, and is not feeding the muscles in the body. If this cleanse is adhered to for more than the recommended minimum 10 days, you are looking at muscle wasting becoming a concern. Now, Master Cleanse fans do not address this or want to hear about it but it is a topic that seriously needs to be discussed. When we fast our digestive system takes a break, starts accessing energy sources through our stored reserves, and when those run out, our bodies will start leeching vital proteins from muscle tissue to ensure that you survive. It's actually a very efficient technique that the body uses to keep us alive. However, when we get to the point where protein is being pulled from muscles, the body is in a weakened state and wasting can happen. Here is a short article about it under it's medical terms, please note that such wasting is usually a result of aging or serious illness but it is clearly stated that poor nutrition can also be a cause; and subsisting on lemonade for extended periods of time is not nutritionally sound.
Loss of muscle and fat tissue due to chronic illness is called cachexia. The general loss of weight and muscle mass that occurs with advancing age is called sarcopenia. In both cachexia and sarcopenia, muscle loss can lead to frailty and adversely affect a variety of clinical outcomes (Rolland 2011; Fearon 2013; Muscaritoli 2013).
Individuals with cachexia and/or sarcopenia have an increased risk of death, infection, and falls; slower wound healing; significantly lower exercise and breathing capacity; and overall diminished quality of life (Sirola 2011; Paddon-Jones 2009; Janssen 2004; Zacker 2006; Thomas 2007; Cosqueric 2006; Cawthon 2007).
Cachexia and sarcopenia share some pathological mechanisms, including excess levels of systemic inflammation, oxidative damage, and reduced levels of anabolic hormones like testosterone, and may occur simultaneously (Rolland 2011; Fearon 2013; Muscaritoli 2013). The term “catabolic wasting” encompasses both sarcopenia and cachexia. (“Catabolic” refers to the breakdown of tissue; it is the opposite of “anabolic,” which means tissue-building.)
Cachexia usually causes more rapid and pronounced weight reduction than sarcopenia and is generally characterized as loss of muscle and fat tissue totaling more than 5% of body weight, but losses of more than 20% of body weight are common (Rolland 2011; Nicolini 2013; Siddiqui 2006; Muscaritoli 2013; Gordon 2004; Gullett 2011). In many cases, a person with cachexia continues losing weight even if they are getting enough calories (Siddiqui 2006; Muscaritoli 2013).
Severe, chronic illnesses such as cancer, AIDS, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are known causes of cachexia (Sididqui 2006; Fearon 2013). Between 50% and 80% of all cancer patients experience cachexia, and it is estimated that cachexia is the main cause of over 20% of all cancer-related deaths (Nicolini 2013; von Haehling 2010; Suzuki 2013). Cachexia in HIV/AIDS patients is common and occurred almost universally before the advent of antiviral HIV drugs (Guillory 2013).
Sarcopenia (from the Greek meaning "poverty of flesh") generally refers to age-related loss of muscle mass and function (Iannuzzi-Sucich 2002). Approximately 50% of people over age 80 experience sarcopenia (Baumgartner 1998; Janssen 2004).
Sarcopenia can also occur as a result of physical inactivity, poor nutrition, or illness. Some researchers refer to age-related muscle loss not associated with an underlying cause as “primary sarcopenia,” and that which occurs as a consequence of one or more other causes as “secondary sarcopenia” (Rolland 2011; Muscaritoli 2013). Also, sarcopenia can sometimes occur in a person who still has significant fat stores, a condition known as “sarcopenic obesity” (Zamboni 2008). Sarcopenia is associated with increased risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes in non-obese adults over age 60 years (Moon 2013).

Do I think everyone on the Master Cleanse will have this experience?
No, of course not.
However, there are cases of individual's doing the Master Cleanse for a year and I was personally acquainted with a woman who did it for 45 days. She looked so frail, too thin, and incredibly sickly, that I was in a state of shock when I saw her and asked why she had done such a thing.
Her response?
"I don't know, I just liked it and I felt so light and thin on it."
This is very dangerous and leads me to another point with cleanses, those with borderline or full-blown eating disorders should not play with these kinds of cleanses.
A short term cleanse, 3-10 days maximum is more than enough for the AVERAGE person.
Anything else needs to be closely monitored by a physician and should not be taken lightly.
As a person who suffered through an eating disorder in my teens, I get how easy and alluring these methods of weight loss can be. Please, remember that these cleanses are about regaining equilibrium, feeling good-not pressured, and resting to regain the best gift on earth; which is optimum health.
This is where my last point comes in, and I want to state very clearly before I begin that I am a firm believer in cleansing/juice fasting, and feel they are a wonderful addition to a healthy lifestyle.

No one told me that there can be long-term side effects of doing something like the Master Cleanse that can have serious health repercussions. I learned, only a short while ago that this particular kind of cleanse can have a severe impact on the thyroid, the metabolism, and can even be considered detrimental to over-all wellness.
I have a family history of thyroid issues, a few years ago, I had done the Master Cleanse and went Raw Vegan once more when I was done, except that time I was not well. My energy levels completely plummeted, I would wake up, eat, shower, and need to sleep for 3-4 hours to recover. I added more greens like Kale and extra spirulina as well as sea weed and vegan protein shakes to my diet to combat what I assumed was a vitamin/protein/iron or mineral deficiency. I continued to eat raw vegan for several more weeks but my symptoms worsened and the doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with me, except that I kept getting UTI's/kidney and sinus infections or severe colds and flu's, was very sluggish, extremely weak, and had high nitrate levels. The nitrate levels baffled one doctor because when he told me to lay off all processed meats and bacon, I replied-raw vegan sir, don't eat that stuff. This continued for about 3 months until I woke up one morning and started craving shrimp, chicken, even steak!!!!! I was ashamed and would eat outside of the house to get my shrimp or chicken "fix". I was hiding it but the truth was it was helping, I also nixed kale and spirulina smoothies because I noticed I felt worse whenever I had them. At the time, I was receiving Bowen treatments from a wonderful lady who was very patient, kind, thoughtful, and did not judge. I explained my predicament in hushed tones when we were alone, she immediately did an iodine absorption test on my arm and began going over my symptoms. I explained that I felt so bad but I had to eat these foods I was craving because I couldn't get through my days without them. She asked if I felt better when I did, to which I replied an emphatic YES! She told me to continue eating them, abandon the only Raw food diet, and listen to my body as well as get blood tests and thyroid checks because my arm sucked up the iodine by the time we were done talking. It was by chance at this point that I had results coming in from a special scan that had been done for my spinal injury, when the doctor got them she had me rush to her office the same day without delay. It turned out I had a goiter on my thyroid along with very low thyroid levels and this worried her more than my spine because the lab tech had circled the  results and wrote-get immediate diagnosis, very low.
This answered many questions, it also turns out that the Kale which I felt bad whenever I ate, is a goitrogen and was inhibiting my thyroids ability to function which was in turn creating difficulty with absorbing nutrients and things like protein dense spirulina, were not being processed properly so it was adding strain on my kidneys! Wah wah.
Having gone through this, studied a lot of information about all types of diet's and cleanses, including the Master Cleanse, I now know that some choices I had made were not well informed or for the best. I have since modified my diet to include meat as I feel I need it-I do not eat a lot of it but I no longer deny myself or feel guilty about needing it.
To all you, (this only applies to the meanies) holier-than-thou, rude, condescending, self-righteous vegans, who can be quite awful and nasty, I say that it's none of your business!
Until illness becomes the defining focus of your life and you are literally battling every day to do the simplest tasks most take for granted, you burden your loved one's with your sickness, work becomes impossible, and your entire outlook on life is bleak and depressed because of it, you do not have the right to make judgement calls on my food intake or anyone else's for that matter.
I love eating healthy foods and was vegetarian from the age of 12, my choices now are to keep me alive and strong with a high quality of life, I will not be bullied and neither should anyone else.
I am not trying to offend anyone but I have had people say and treat me in such an awful way because their vegan sensibilities were offended and it was not fair. I do not want anyone else who may be suffering and happens to read this post, to feel like they have to be ashamed. Nor do I want vegans to be put off, I just know that we do not understand what another is going through and should keep judgement to ourselves.
Food is a blessing not a measure of character.
So, how do I eat now?
I incorporate Paleo, Raw foods, Whole foods, Pescetarian and Vegetarian foods to my diet. I have also added Protein smoothies that Poppa Bear suggested. He's a personal trainer and warned me my protein intake was too low, especially because I am more of a grazer, small appetite person than big plates and portions of food kind of gal. I also used natural Bovine desiccated thyroid, liquid iodine, natural adrenal and estrogen products, liquid iron, Omega oils, natural anti-inflammatory product, organic coconut and flax oils, probiotics and digestive enzymes, elimination diet and autoimmune protocols, as well as doing much more gentle exercise routines/more rest days, and liquid, short 3-day fasts. This with a lot of prayer, God's grace, and Poppa Bears unwavering support has gotten my health back on track. My test results came back from my endocrinologist and she was very happy, she said all my levels are normal, goiter is shrunk and will only need to be monitored every 2 years, as well as having my iron levels at normal. This is so exciting. We are checking into Cortisol levels difficulties but this I am also being responsible with, I am working on how I manage stress, make an effort to get away more, and have been walking regularly to clear my mind.
This leads me to part 2 of cleansing, once you have chosen the cleanse that is appropriate for you, gotten your recipes all gathered, written out the grocery list for juicing stuff you need, I suggest you inform your friends and family that you are doing this. That you may have some cranky days, need to rest days, and that they need to be supportive not sabotaging of your efforts.
People have offered me chips and chocolate while fasting, believe it or not!
Along with informing others, get anything that is a temptation OUT OF THE HOUSE, and prepare your path! You need to replace all that bad stuff immediately with all the fruits and vegetables you will use for juicing, any miso or bone broths you may choose to have will need to be at the ready, and eat vegetarian for 3 days leading up to your cleanse so your system is not taxed for the duration of the cleanse. I also recommend 2 big bottles of spring water, like the huge jugs, you need a lot of water.
3-Once you have gone through those steps do your 3-10 days max of cleansing with joy, kindness, gentleness, and self-love in your heart. I do 3 day fasts now with juices, bone broths, and miso broths, detox tea, and loads of water mingled with the evening warm almond milk and cinnamon.
4-Lastly, and most importantly, HOW YOU COME OFF OF A FAST IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS HOW YOU GET READY AND DO ONE!
Do not run to eat a steak and French fries, a whole plate of pasta, fried eggs, or anything remotely cheesy. No ice-cream, cake, cookies or pie either.
Did you know that coming off of an extended fast by eating greasy, rich, or heavy foods can have ou end up in excruciating pain or even hospitalized? No, this is not a joke!
The best way to break a fast is by having broth, then later on in the day have more and add a banana or a pear-ripe not hard. You should continue to drink your juices and water. If you feel up to it the next day move onto having a soft boiled egg, broth and a juice. Eat more mild, soft fruit, for supper you should be able to have a salad with your broth. Day 3 is usually when you can start incorporating more vegetarian foods and will be better able to eat solid food. I don't recommend eating anything fried for a good 2-3 weeks. I can't eat that kind of stuff for way longer than that after cleansing. Now is actually a great time to incorporate a whole foods diet with regular exercise and heaps of positive self-talk. You can actually get yourself a wholefoods or vegan or paleo menu ready before you finish your fast, so when you are done cleansing you are ready to roll.
A little side note, I do not recommend fasting or cleanses during high stress times like when you are moving, during special occasions, exams, surgery, etc. You need to set yourself up for success and when there is too much pressure in your life, the focus cannot be on giving yourself your best. I also do not suggest that you watch culinary shows, it's just torture for some people and will obviously make you crave food. Lastly, I want to make mention of these 2 things:
1) Do not only drink sweet juices, your cells need greens and you do not want to feed candida. Balance and moderation my friends!
2)there are days that are more difficult and intense than others on a cleanse, particularly juice fasts. I personally struggle the evening of the 1st day, the 5th and 7th days when I am on extended fasts. Most people feel that these are the days they experience the most difficulty with detox syptoms and BIG food cravings or a strong desire to quit.
Day 3
Day 5
Day 7
Day 10-yup, the last day can be the worst!

Just remember that you can make it through and that cravings for food=habit and or maybe you need more juice, drink! Listen to your body and if you really cannot make it through the entire cleanse, do not beat yourself up about it. Celebrate your accomplishment, remember to come off the fast carefully, and there's always another season to try again.
Here are some pics of the juices I made over the 3 days, and miso broth. I have a masticating juicer from Dr. Mercola which is slower than a Breville-which is an awesome juicer, but a masticating juicer really gets all the juice from the ingredients you use.

This is my awesome juicer that I highly recommend!

This is what the juicer spits out when it removes the juice, so cool!

Be careful because things like parsnips, fennel, and unpeeled celery, can slow down a juicer and may need to be cleaned out to make sure it doesn't jam.

I use glass jars from other drinks or things I have finished off, I prefer to keep them in those jars because plastic gets fruit and veg taste stuck in it. Plus, when I am heading out I make many juices for the day in advance in the morning, so I am not stuck being dangerously hungry. Glass jars are best for keeping them in the fridge and I am recycling-double win!

Something to think about when you are cleansing in getting outside and walking in nature where it's beautiful, will calm you, and will contribute to an overall positive outlook. It gives you a chance to reconnect with God, nature, and yourself.

Nature walk with a pet pooch is always a good idea, we took the Rockstar out with us and had loads of laughs watching him run around like a nut chasing squirrels! He's still a cutie, look at that punim!

This is Rocky ignoring me as he is diligently checked for the squirrels he could hear and see.

Goiters and the Thyroid, Plus Natural Options (Thyroid Part 5)

It's Goiter discussion time boys & girls!

I know, I know, you are asking yourself, "What the hey is a goiter?"
Well, if you have been so lucky as to avoid this unpleasant thing that leads to a host of other unpleasant things, now you must prepare to be enlightened! Let's start with legitimate sources for our definition.

The Mayo Clinic defines a goiter as the following:
Goiter (GOI-tur) is an abnormal enlargement of your thyroid gland. Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck just below your Adam's apple. Although goiters are usually painless, a large goiter can cause a cough and make it difficult for you to swallow or breathe.
The most common cause of goiter worldwide is a lack of iodine in the diet. In the United States, where the use of iodized salt is common, a goiter is more often due to the over- or underproduction of thyroid hormones or to nodules that develop in the gland itself.
Treatment depends on the size of the goiter, your symptoms and the underlying cause. Small goiters that aren't noticeable and don't cause problems usually don't need treatment.

Thank you Mayo Clinic!

Goiters are warnings, they are your bodies way of saying something is not right. This means we need to seek help if a goiter is suspected, even when they are small, they need to be monitored regularly by a doctor specializing in Endocronology. The reason being is that, while many goiters are benign, they can become cancerous.
I have included some pictures down below, to show you what a goiter looks like.
(Warning, if you have a queasy and or delicate constitution, you may want to skip the pics that follow. They are important though, so try to view them.

Here it is:
                   goiter

This is what it can look like on a person:

Goiters can effect both men and women, they begin small but as the thyroid worsens, goiters begin to swell and make their presence rather obvious. To reiterate: It is not a good idea to leave goiters untreated as they can lead to cancer.

A goiter can also be signaled by bulging eyes:

They can be a pretty harrowing experience to live through. Along with the swelling there can be extreme fatique, nutritional deficiency, hormonal imbalances, rapid weight gain or loss, a feeling of tightness or discomfort around neck, difficulty swallowing, voice changes, digestion issues, depression, (The list could go on but I will stop here for now because this leads to graves & hashimoto's which was in an earlier post.) when a goiter becomes too enlarged and or cancerous, surgery is required. (Warning, next pic is VERY medically graphic)

Who can get a goiter? Well read next what the Mayo Clinic has to say about that:

Goiters can affect anyone. They may be present at birth and occur at any time throughout life, although they're more common after age 40. Some common risk factors for goiter include:
  • A lack of dietary iodine. People living in areas where iodine is in short supply and who don't have access to iodine supplements are at high risk of goiter.
  • Being female. Because women are more prone to thyroid disorders, they're also more likely to develop goiters.
  • Your age. Your chances of developing a goiter increase with age.
  • Medical history. A personal or family history of autoimmune disease increases your risk.
  • Pregnancy and menopause. For reasons that aren't entirely clear, thyroid problems are more likely to occur during pregnancy and menopause.
  • Certain medications. Some medical treatments, including immunosuppressants, antiretrovirals, the heart drug amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone, others) and the psychiatric drug lithium (Lithobid, others), increase your risk.
  • Radiation exposure. Your risk increases if you've had radiation treatments to your neck or chest area or you've been exposed to radiation in a nuclear facility, test or accident.

Autoimmune Issues & Your Thyroid part 4

Good morning lovelies, today we are discussing how problems with the thyroid can be affected by your autoimmune sytem in this 4th installement of the thyroid journey. I have links to the site where I obtained the medical information, (as I am not a doctor, I try to get the best information for you from trusted sites) you can click on the links if you would like to. This is actually going to be part 1 of autoimmune because it is A LOT to cover and there are layers-like onions donkey. Haha.
I don't want to overwhelm and I want to give sound advice with follow-up on some measures you can take to help yourself-always consult with a professional of course. I am speaking of exercise, dietary changes, and lifestyle changes that are needed. That's why there will be more to come on this subject and I want to be thorough on the food front because if you are struggling with an autoimmune disorder, you are going to need loads of info. on autoimmune protocol diets and elimination of triggers. I will also cover children and pregnancy and a whole bunch of other stuff that I will remember to write about. As I said, it's a bit overwhelming if I give it all in one shot, so for now let us start at the beginning with background and symptoms.

This aspect of thyroid illness is still difficult for many because it can take on average 7 years before proper diagnosis is made. Yes, you read that correctly, 7 years-sometimes longer!

There are several reasons for this:

1) Usually, it takes time to develop these issues and many factors play into having an autoimmune illness. ie: stress levels, diet, allergies, family history, no family history, exposure to chemicals and other harmful substances, etc.

2) Adrenal glands are often effected and can present as fatigue, crying jags, constant feeling of emotional upheaval, difficulty coping, anxiety attacks, erratic behaviour and mood swings, short fuse, difficulty sleeping, lack of interest in previous activities one enjoyed. Many of these can be attributed to anxiety disorders, depression, grieving, pms, hormonal changes and unfortunately, sometimes even hypochondria. That's why it's important to ask for the right tests, understand it can take time as it is a process of elimination, you may need to see several doctor's before someone listens or believes you, and you will have to be your biggest and loudest advocate for your health.

3) Adrenal issues are still not completely understood and the medical establishment is running to catch up with this rather modern phenomenon. This is an issue that impacts the lives of every person living in these modern times, as we are experiencing such tremendous health, environmental, and spiritual stressors, it is taxing our adrenal glands in ways that were previously not known let alone thought of. Sometimes, and especially for now, it is a great idea to seek out alternative forms of treatment to see what naturopathic medecine, accupuncture, and relaxing forms of exercise, can do for you.

4) This issue effects more women than it does men, sorry gentleman I am not trying to dismiss your valid health concerns, this is just medically documented fact. As such, women are often ignored by doctor's as being a bit hysterical and overly dramatic, as well as being dismissed because we could not possibly know anything about our bodies since we have not been to med school. We only live within our bodies for our entire life time but meh, what do we know? WRONG!!!!!! Again, I say to you, women & men, YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO BE YOUR BIGGEST AND LOUDEST ADVOCATE FOR YOUR HEALTH!

5) The symtoms that are most to be concerned about are also the most subtle. Things such as hair loss, dry skin, brittle nails, bloating and swelling, sweats, and sleep disturbances, are things we can ignore for a long time and that's dangerous because if left untreated much worse things will happen and you will begin to fully comprehend, but only once it is too late; the impact autoimmune illness will have.

Autoimmune Thyroiditis

It is possible that the main title of the report Autoimmune Thyroiditis is not the name you expected. Please check the synonyms listing to find the alternate name(s) and disorder subdivision(s) covered by this report.

Synonyms

  • Hashimoto's thyroiditis
  • Hashimoto's disease
  • Lymphadenoid goiter
  • Struma lymphomatosa
  • Goitrous autoimmune thyroiditis
  • Chronic Thyroiditis
  • Hashimoto's syndrome
  • Grave's disease
  • Postpartum thyroiditis

Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

Also called Hashimoto's disease, Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease, a disorder in which the immune system turns against the body's own tissues. In people with Hashimoto's, the immune system attacks the thyroid. This can lead to hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid does not make enough hormones for the body's needs.
Located in the front of your neck, the thyroid gland makes hormones that control metabolism. This includes your heart rate and how quickly your body uses calories from the foods you eat.

Causes of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

The exact cause of Hashimoto's is not known, but many factors are believed to play a role. They include:
Genes. People who get Hashimoto's often have family members who have thyroid disease or other autoimmune diseases. This suggests a genetic component to the disease.
Hormones. Hashimoto's affects about seven times as many women as men, suggesting that sex hormones may play a role. Furthermore, some women have thyroid problems during the first year after having a baby. Although the problem usually goes away, as many as 20% of these women develop Hashimoto's years later.
Excessive iodine. Research suggests certain drugs and too much iodine, a trace element required by your body to make thyroid hormones, may trigger thyroid disease in susceptible people.
Radiation exposure. Increased cases of thyroid disease have been reported in people exposed to radiation, including the atomic bombs in Japan, the Chernobyl nuclear accident, and radiation treatment for a form of blood cancer called Hodgkin's disease.

Symptoms of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

Hashimoto's symptoms may be mild at first or take years to develop. The first sign of the disease is often an enlarged thyroid, called a goiter. The goiter may cause the front of your neck to look swollen. A large goiter may make swallowing difficult. Other symptoms of an underactive thyroid due to Hashimoto's may include:
  • weight gain
  • fatigue
  • paleness or puffiness of the face
  • joint and muscle pain
  • constipation
  • inability to get warm
  • difficulty getting pregnant
  • joint and muscle pain
  • hair loss or thinning, brittle hair
  • irregular or heavy menstrual periods
  • depression
  • slowed heart rate
Because the symptoms of Hashimoto's thyroid may be similar to those for other medical conditions, it is important to see your doctor for a diagnosis.

Treatments for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

There is no cure for Hashimoto's, but replacing hormones with medication can regulate hormone levels and restore your normal metabolism.
The pills are available in several different strengths. The exact dose your doctor prescribes will depend on a number of factors, including:
  • age
  • weight
  • severity of hypothyroidism
  • other health problems
  • other medicines that may interact with synthetic thyroid hormone

Autoimmune illness is so often misunderstood and still new to many, it is understandable that we suffer alone with it's debilitating effects. I think the above ecard puts it quite succinctly.
If you are suffering with an autoimmune illness please connect with other people, check out the Stop the thyroid madness blog-it's a wonderful resource and community for thyroid and autoimmune sufferers(link is below), check out local and even far away autoimmune chapters or organizations(links below to get you started). Mostly though, rest and don't let others make you feel guilty for it. Your exhaustion and myriad of symptoms are real, your life is not your own when at the mercy of this kind of illness, you need to be gentle and understanding because so many others won't be. Most importantly, don't give up and make the necessary lifestyle adjustments you need to be good to yourself. You can get through this and we can do it together, hold on to your smile and hope.
